  • Time spent in front of my computer is an investment in my journey of literary growth.

  • I find writing fiction is a like a journey. Each new word in a manuscript is a step in the learning process to perfection.

As a youngster growing, I loved reading. That passion continues today, only now I seek to understand the process of fiction writing, in addition to the enjoyment it gives.

Amongst the books in my library, in addition to fictional favourites such as Lee Child, JK Rowling, Tom Sharpe and Douglas Adams are Stephen King’s Danse Macabre and Gotham Writers’ Workshop’s Writing Fiction.

My first attempt at a novel was a story about the British Merchant Navy (I have spent over fifteen years as a marine engineer). Finishing it and thinking I was God’s latest gift to writing I had the manuscript assessed. The report brought me quickly down to earth and made me realise I needed to learn the techniques of fiction writing. Completing a course at The Creative Hub in Auckland gave greater insight into the process and put me further along the road to publication although I’m not there yet.

As a great grandson of the well-known British artist Frank Paton, I often wondered why none of Frank’s artistic genes were passed down. The only drawing I was any good at was of the engineering type. Now I hope that Frank’s genes are at last emerging as latent literary talent.

I currently have a number of works in various stages of progress.
